Collie Dog Temperament and Lifespan
The Collie is a sweet, well-bred, friendly, and kind dog who likes to spend time with her family dog and to participate in all household activities. She is especially keen on children as she tries to use each opportunity to play with them and observe them in their games. There is no doubt that the Collie is highly intelligent, loyal, and learns quickly. Devotion of this dog deserves separate attention. She would risk her life for the sake of her owner. Despite her good nature, she can be very suspicious of strangers, particularly when the children in her family are under threat. She will bark but most probably not attack the stranger. The average lifespan of Collies is from 10 to 14 years.
How Much Does a Collie Dog Cost and Price Range
The price of a Collie puppy can vary depending on the place where you buy her from, the breeder, and your personal goals in terms of your future dog. You can get a border Collie from "working" lines for $250-500 but such a dog will not have registration. Border collies boast their working abilities, good health and socialization. Such dogs do not necessarily have perfect looks. You can also get a puppy from a breeder registered in a Canadian Kennel Club or American Kennel Club for at least 700 but in reality you are expected to pay not less than $1000. Buying a dog from a breeder, ask him questions about shots, medical tests, authenticity of the breed, etc.
Collie Dog Colors, Shedding, Full Size and Average Weight
The Collie has two coat types: smooth (short hair) and rough (long hair). The Smooth Collie has a dense, short, flat outer coat and a thick undercoat. The Rough Collie has a straight, harsh, abundant outer coat and a furry, soft, thick undercoat. Both types of coats shed moderately all year round. The Collie comes in four colors: blue merle (silvery blue and black), tricolor (black with white markings and tan shadings), sable, and white (mainly white with markings).
The dog of this breed is a very clean dog almost without any doggie odor. However, you will need to brush the long coat of approximately twice a week. The Smooth Collie requires brushing only once a week. Bathe your pet as needed, usually once in two months. Some owners prefer to hire a professional groomer, especially for the Rough Collie variety, because her coat is too thick. Unexperienced owners may find brushing a discouraging and difficult chore. Male Collies stand from 24 to 26 inches tall; while females stand from 22 to 24 inches tall. These dogs weigh from 50 to 70 pounds.
